Client Guide

Everything you need to set up, customize, and get the best performance out of Leather Client.

Installation

Leather Client runs on Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit). Grab the installer from the downloads page and launch it.

  1. Run the installer executable.
  2. If Windows SmartScreen appears, click More info, then Run anyway.
  3. Launch Leather Client from your Start menu or desktop shortcut when setup finishes.
Automatic Java Handling: Leather manages Java runtimes automatically in the background, so you don't need to install Java manually.

First Launch

On your first launch, Leather Client walks you through a simple setup assistant:

  1. Sign In: Log into your official Microsoft / Minecraft account. Your session token is stored securely on your machine so you only sign in once.
  2. Create Instance: Pick your Minecraft version and mod loader (Fabric, NeoForge, or Vanilla).
  3. Allocate Memory: Choose how much RAM to allocate (4 GB to 6 GB is recommended for most PCs).

Instances & Memory

An instance is a self-contained Minecraft profile with its own mods, saves, and options. Keeping setups isolated prevents mod conflicts when switching versions.

Managing Instances

  • Go to Instances → New Instance to create additional setups.
  • Double-click any instance in your library to select it and head straight to the Play screen.
  • Leather automatically installs essential performance mods (Sodium, Lithium, EntityCulling, and Nvidia acceleration) on Leather Companion setups.

RAM Allocation

Set RAM per instance based on your system specs. For vanilla or light modding, 4 GB is ideal. Leave at least 2 to 4 GB of RAM free for Windows to prevent system stuttering.

HUD Modules

The Leather Companion comes packed with customizable HUD modules. Open the in-game menu while playing to toggle and position any module:

Available Modules

  • Performance: FPS, Ping, CPS (Left/Right), Session Timer, Real-time Clock.
  • Movement & World: Coordinates (XYZ), Direction Facing, Speedometer, Toggle Sprint/Sneak.
  • Combat: Target HUD (Health & Name), Hit Reach Distance, Combo Counter, Custom Crosshair.
  • Status & Inventory: Armor Durability, Hand Item Durability, Active Potion Effects, Kit Saver/Sorter.
  • Utility: On-screen Keystrokes, Hold-to-Zoom, Fullbright.

Back Papers™

Back Papers are Leather Client's signature cosmetic system. Instead of adding heavy custom player models that slow down your game, Back Papers render directly using Minecraft's native cape pipeline:

  • Zero Frame Loss: Same GPU overhead as standard capes.
  • Shader & Resourcepack Compatible: Works seamlessly alongside Iris and Sodium shaders.
  • Multi-Version: Equip a Back Paper once in the Leather Network tab, and it follows you across supported versions.

In-Game Commands

Access client social tools directly inside Minecraft using /leather (or /leatherclient):

/leather party invite <username>        # Invite player to party

Leather Network

The Leather Network tab connects your social profile and cosmetics locker:

  • Friends & Parties: See who is online, send invites, and chat across servers.
  • Cosmetics Locker & Shop: Unlock and equip Back Papers and badges using Leather Coins or event codes.

Auto-Login

When joining servers running the Leather Auth Bridge plugin, Leather Client authenticates your active session automatically. No password prompts or extra login screens required.

Offline Mode

For testing on local networks or LAN servers (online-mode=false), toggle Settings → Account → Offline Mode and enter your local username handle.

Troubleshooting

Game crashes on launch

Reduce allocated RAM under your instance settings. Allocating more memory than your PC has available is the most common cause of launch failures.

Cosmetics not appearing

Ensure your active account is logged in and linked in the Leather Network tab. Remember that Back Papers are visible to other Leather Client users.

Sign-in loops

Go to Settings → Accounts, sign out of your account, and sign back in to refresh your Microsoft session token.

FAQ

Is Leather Client allowed on public servers?

Yes. Leather Client is purely a performance and quality-of-life client. It contains no combat automation, auto-clickers, or X-ray mods.

Can vanilla players see my Back Papers?

Only players using Leather Client will see your equipped Back Paper; vanilla players will see your standard Minecraft skin.

How do updates work?

Leather Client checks for updates on launch and prompts you to update automatically when a new version is available.
